Abstract
Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the effects and investigate the side effects of permethrin as clothing impregnants.
Methods: This study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of efficacy of permethrin-impregnated uniforms. 141 soldiers (71 in experimental group, 70. in control group) were randomly assigned to receive either permethrin-impregnated or nonimpregnated uniforms. The authors compared the counts of mosquitoes bites from July to August 1999 between two groups. For investigating the side effects of permethrin-impregnated uniforms, 179 soldiers (92 in experimental group, 87 in control group) were randomly assigned to receive either permethrin-impregnated or nonimpregnated uniforms. The authors conducted the hematological examination from July to October 1999 between two group. Patch test for 100 inpatients was performed to evaluate the skin effects of permethrin.
Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the counts of mosquitoes bites in the .permethrin group(1.1¡¾1.3, 0.7¡¾0.9) and that in the control group(2.0¡¾1.1, 1.5¡¾1.3) during two weeks. But there was not a statistically significant difference of mosquitoes bites between two group since 3 week. And there was not a statistically significant difference between hematological changes in the permethrin group and that in the control group during 4 months. As a result of patch test, there was not contact dermatitis neither allergic dermatitis
Conclusion: 0.2% permethrin - impregnated uniforms provided significant protection against mosquitoes during 2 weeks.
